Bedsores are often the #1 reported patient harm in health systems. Martin oversaw the successful journey of BBI’s novel SEM Scanner, the first hand-held PI/PU risk assessment device, through FDA de novo Marketing Authorization and the UK’s National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Medical Innovation Briefing process (MIB 182, 2019). Using a safety-systems engineering framework to develop a different understanding of “why” PI/PUs occur, Martin collaborated with leading clinicians to develop a technology-enabled strategy designed to make PI/PU prevention achievable. In the same year, he deployed it at scale – while also delivering significant cost savings at the payer and provider levels.
“In healthcare, achieving prevention of avoidable conditions is quite difficult to accomplish and sustain – so I’m very proud of our work,” said Burns. “This award reflects the efforts of the entire team at BBI as well as all of our collaborators who work to significantly reduce the incidence of PI/PUs in acute, post-acute, palliative end-of-life care and long-term acute care (LTAC) settings, skilled nursing facilities (SNF), as well as the nurse-led home care environment.”
